The pot of money some people are inheriting is getting bigger

Inheritances go up thanks to property

The average amount inherited in the UK has gone up by £23,000 in six years because of the rising value of property.

New research by the International Longevity Centre shows more than a million adults a year are inheriting money from their relatives.

And many people who are getting money are putting it into more property. It's thought that's one of the factors that helped to push prices up over the last decade.

The average sum inherited in 2003 to 2004 was £44,000. That compares to £21,000 in 1997 to 1998.

In all, 2.5 per cent of the population aged 16 or over inherits something each year. In 2006, that meant a total of 1.2m people.
