Some dodgy landlords might not be treating deposits in the right way

Some landlords may be ignoring the tenant deposit scheme

It's believed that a number of landlords could be ignoring a scheme set up to protect the deposits paid by their tenants.

The Tenant Deposit Scheme came in just over a year ago, and was supposed to see landlords keeping tenants' money in one of three schemes. That way, it would ensure the landlord had the money to return the deposit at the end of their lease.

The scheme is compulsory. But both the homeless charity Shelter and Citizen's Advice Bureau believe many landlords aren't bothering with it. This is because they are still getting a high level of enquiries about problems with deposits.

Landlords who don't sign up to a scheme won't be fined, but can be sued by a tenant, and may be ordered to hand over up to three times the value of the deposit.
