Great time to be a landlord as rental demand goes up 41 per cent

If you are able to invest in rental property, there's more evidence that this is a great time to do it.

New figures from estate agent Your Move have shown that demand for rental housing went up 41 per cent in May, year-on-year.

And the demand was even up month-on-month, with the number of leases starting rising 14 per cent from April.

Your Move says May's increase in tenant demand is part of a bigger rental trend.

The number of leases starting in 2008 in total is up 34 per cent compared to the same time period in 2007.

The credit crunch is being blamed. Those who would have been in a position to buy their first home right now aren't able to get a mortgage, meaning they are continuing to rent.

The agency thinks buy-to-let will continue to grow this year.
